About us
Pierre Loti pays fitting tribute to the world traveler, novelist and romantic who serves at its inspiration. Born in Rochefort in Western France in the mid-19th century, Louis Marie-Julien Viaud felt the urge to see the world and joined the French Navy at the tender age of 17 to do so. It was during these travels that he spent time in Istanbul and adopted the pseudonym “Pierre Loti” to pen the first of many novels set in the country.
Aziyade, a stormy and romantic tale that chronicles both his illicit affair with a young harem girl and his burgeoning love of the Turkish and Ottoman cultures would make him a swashbuckling literary star in his own time. Growing up in a neighborhood called Pierre Loti in the heart of Istanbul century later, Orhan Cakir loved to read of the romantic travels of Pierre Loti and through his books came to appreciate both his own culture and that of the adventuresome Frenchman who is so beloved by Turkey that a district filled with cafes Loti frequented and incorporated into his stories is also named after him.
Whether you are searching for someplace to get a little sustenance for your own explorations of where the night will lead or you are hoping to regale others with your stories of worldly adventures over a glass of wine and a bite (even those adventures that happen day to day here in New York) as M. Loti was known to do, Pierre Loti provides the ideal backdrop to do so.
Wine and Signature Cocktails
Pierre Loti features generous and seasonally changing selection of between 30 and 40 red, white, rose and sparkling wines by the glass. In addition to the glasses listed on the menu, a chalkboard hangs from the exposed brick wall next to the bar touting myriad daily wine specials, which often include limited bottlings of new and old world wines along with adventuresome forays into glasses and flights of wine from around the old Ottoman empire, including Turkey, Israel, Greece, Bulgaria and Georgia. Alternatively, you can create your own tailored wine flight tasting based on any of our offered wines.
By the bottle, there are always over 200 selections from France and around the Mediterranean and a knowledgeable staff of well-trained wine professionals to answer questions and guide guests to the choice best suited to their mood or meal. Our signature cocktail list has been crafted by our resident mixologist who uses fresh ingredients, varying by season, ranging from muddled blueberries in the summer to thyme or honey in winter.
Food
Each Pierre Loti location has its own unique food menu, however they all share the same wine friendly food made from only the freshest ingredients. Our Mediterranean inspired menus include ingredients hand picked from local producers and farmers markets every morning. Small plates, like tartares and various seasonal salads, are available year-round along with a more substantial menu that changes with the seasons.
In addition, all the Pierre Lotis have a varied and extensive cheese and charcuterie list with selections from around the world that can be tailored into a cheese plate to compliment the wine selection. We offer a selection of assorted chocolates and truffles which can also tasted and paired with wines and champagnes.
